The Chicago Upright 1927 is unapologetically authentic. Built in 1927, this Baldwin Monarch has seen nearly a century of music, wear, and life. Its voice is dark and aged, with tubby low strings, a worn‑in midrange, and treble notes that surprise with their sweetness and long sustain. It is not a polished, pristine instrument. It is a piano with a story in every note.
Five stereo microphone positions capture its character from multiple perspectives, ranging from the immediacy of close mics to the lively reflections of a medium‑sized living room. The result is a set of tones that lets you decide exactly how much intimacy or space you want in the sound.
Every scar in the finish, every compacted hammer, every stretched string tells you this upright has lived. The low end thumps with a rounded, almost percussive tubbiness. The mids speak with the unmistakable voice of an old upright. The highs rise above with a delicate sweetness that lingers. Its limited dynamics and dark tone give it a grounded, unvarnished realism that cannot be faked or over‑engineered.
For all its imperfections, it is endlessly playable. Sit down at this piano and it responds with honesty, delivering performances that feel personal, organic, and deeply human.

A pair of Omni-directional condenser mics underneath the keyboard facing the bridge. Provides a clear, crisp, intimate sound with very light hammer action noise.
A pair of cardioid microphones near the soundboard behind the piano. This gives that characteristic sound of an upright piano while still being close and wide.
Pulled back a couple feet from the back side of the soundboard. This gives a more spacious and natural sound, with a bright crisp tone.
A wide pair of microphones aiming at the hammers. Despite what you may expect, this position gives a dark, distant, but wide tone.
A pair of spaced omni-directional microphones about 6 feet away from the piano. These capture the entire piano and the room. This position gives a more distant sound and works best blended with the other microphone positions.
