A Modern Upright with a Clean, Lively Voice

Compact in size yet full of character, the Ningbo Upright 2021 captures the clear, lively tone of a modern 48‑inch upright in pristine condition. Its voice is bright and articulate, with just a hint of that familiar upright “bloom” in the low mids, adding warmth without clouding the clarity. Perfect for arrangements that need definition and presence without the footprint of a grand.

Five stereo microphone positions were used to capture its full dimension, from detailed, up‑close perspectives to a more open, room‑aware sound. This range of options gives you precise control over how the instrument sits in a mix, while preserving the natural realism of the performance.

The Piano

Sampled from a nearly new Hailun H‑1P, this upright was recorded in the inviting acoustics of a small living room. The environment keeps the sound close and immediate, making every note feel like it’s played right in front of you. Its youthful condition means the action is responsive, the tone even across the range, and every nuance of the performance is faithfully conveyed. That slight upright character gives it personality, while its overall cleanliness makes it versatile enough for both modern and traditional settings.

Technical Details

Microphone Positions

Front Under

A pair of Omni-directional condenser mics underneath the keyboard facing the bridge. Provides a clear, crisp, intimate sound with very light hammer action noise.

Behind Close

A pair of cardioid microphones near the soundboard behind the piano. This gives that characteristic sound of an upright piano while still being close and wide.

Behind Spaced

Pulled back a couple feet from the back side of the soundboard. This gives a more spacious and natural sound, with a bright crisp tone.

Front Over

A wide pair of microphones aiming at the hammers. Despite what you may expect, this position gives a dark, distant, but wide tone.

Room

A pair of spaced omni-directional microphones about 6 feet away from the piano. These capture the entire piano and the room. This position gives a more distant sound and works best blended with the other microphone positions.
