The Piano
This instrument began its life in Vienna, crafted by one of the world’s most respected piano makers. It served for decades as a practice piano at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna, absorbing the touch of countless students and performers. Eventually restored and sold to a family in Boise, Idaho, it now carries both the legacy of its origin and the freshness of its renewal.
Despite its age, the piano feels new under the fingers. The restoration brought it back to full performance condition, but the soul remains. Its sound is focused in the midrange, with a clear, assertive tone that projects without harshness. It does not aim for cinematic sweep or exaggerated dynamics. It speaks with precision, control, and a sense of musical purpose.

A pair of omni-directional microphones set close to the bridge. The close mics give an “in your face” sound, but maintain the fullness and resonance due to the omni-directional pattern.
Under
A pair of microphone underneath the piano. This captures the percussive nature of the piano with a little bit of woody warmth.
Hammers
Cardioid microphones set up wide near the player position, facing the hammers. This resembles most what the player will hear while sitting at the piano.
Spaced Pair
A pair of microphones set up close together to capture the full sound of the piano without sounding artificially wide. provides a natural, more narrow sound.
Room
A pair of spaced omni-directional microphones about 8 feet away from the piano. These capture the entire piano and the room. This position gives a more distant sound and works best blended with the other microphone positions.
