A balance of elegance and grit, the New York L 1926 blends nearly a century of history with the unmistakable quality of Steinway craftsmanship. Its original strings and soundboard add a touch of age‑worn texture to the iconic voice, creating an instrument that feels both distinctive and instantly familiar.
Four stereo microphone positions capture its full range — from close and immediate to naturally spacious — preserving not just the notes, but the character of the room and the piano itself.
Built in 1926 in the New York Factory, this Steinway Model L has kept its voice for nearly a century. Every part (hammers, strings, soundboard) is original, cared for with the kind of maintenance that preserves both function and soul.
Its tone carries the marks of age in the best way: a subtle growl in the bass, a softened shimmer in the highs, and a warmth that only comes from strings seasoned by decades. It’s not the sweeping projection of a concert grand. It speaks in a more intimate voice, shaped by the walls of a medium-sized living room.
The result is a piano that feels close, immediate, and unmistakably Steinway, with history woven into every note.
This 1926 New York Steinway Model L (Serial No. 241663) measures 5’10” and retains every original component. After decades in California, it was relocated to Olympia, WA, where a carefully controlled environment has kept it in remarkable playing condition.
Sampling took place in a small-sized, open living room to preserve the instrument’s natural intimacy. Four stereo microphone positions were chosen and placed with precision, capturing not only the piano’s tonal depth and aged character, but also the subtle influence of the room itself.

A pair of omni-directional microphones set close to the bridge. The close mics give an “in your face” sound, but maintain the fullness and resonance due to the omni-directional pattern.
A set of Mid/Side microphones set up to capture the full sound of the piano without sounding artificially wide. provides a natural, thinner sound.
Cardioid microphones set up wide near the player position, facing the hammers. This resembles most what the player will hear while sitting at the piano.
A pair of spaced omni-directional microphones about 6 feet away from the piano. These capture the entire piano and the room. This position gives a more distant sound and works best blended with the other microphone positions.
